Why Should We Always Remember About Death?

Last night,I attended my weekly tafseer class and at the end of the class,we were discussing how important it is to always be reminded that death can happen at anytime. To constantly think about death might sound quite depressing but this particular reminder can act as a catalyst when we are trying to increase our iman.Instead of looking death in a negative way, assuming that all you do is worry about it and get anxious,it can actually be one of the best motivation in improving our iman.We know that death will approach everyone.Age does not matter. It’s inevitable. It does not warn us beforehand. It is completely unpredictable. It can happen now, tomorrow or next week ( Just typing this out gives me shivers down my spine). With that in mind it is enough to push us to be a better muslim every second.

“Oh what if I  die tomorrow?...Let’s wake up for qiamullai tonight then” “Oh what if I die tomorrow morning…I shall wake up early so that I’ll be able to pray Subuh on time” “Oh what if I die tomorrow…I shall start covering up now” “Oh what if I die tomorrow…I shall start praying five times a day now”

The remembrance of death reminds us of Him.When we’re constantly thinking of Him,we will think twice before doing things that do not please Him and stay away from it and we will naturally gravitate toward doing what pleases Him such as ibadah, covering up,working hard and speaking kindly to others. However, the common issue is that we seem to think that death is only for the elderlies.Phrases such as “Oh,I’m still young…I will repent when I’m ‘older’…pffth, relax.”  or “It’s okay,I will cover myself soon when I get ‘hidayah’ “are the common excuses. The reality is no one knows how long they will live and one will never change until he,himself wants to change.Regardless of how many reminders he is given,no amount will affect him until he decides to take action. The things we do on Earth is an investment for the hereafter. If we invested badly, the outcome will be little. If we invested smartly, the outcome will be fruitful. The amount of time we spent to do what pleases Him will determine our future in the hereafter.Life on Earth is just momentarily.Would we want to sacrifice our ‘happily ever after’in the hereafter  just to have fun for a brief moment? Give it a long thought, think about the forever.Sacrifice a little for Him,for ourselves, for our own end destination. At the end of the day,ask ourselves

“What do we live for?”
To please Him.That's the main reason why we're breathing.

However,as humans,we are often forgetful. When things are easy and fun,we tend to forget Him.That’s  why we have to constantly remind each other whenever any of us gets off track.Reach for each other’s hand when we feel like we’re flying off the ground.May Allah protect us from the evil of the Earth and hereafter and bless us with everything good in the world and hereafter.Ameen.
Everything that is good is from Him and any mistakes are from me.

Let’s be better everyday, even if it’s just taking baby steps :-)

Love,
Diyanah Nadrah
